Having honed his skills doing scores of book jackets, Galdone was able to conceive and
produce them in a very short time. This endeared him to editors and art directors and he
continued to do jackets, between book jobs, late into his career.

He lettered many of the jackets himself. Lettering of all kinds was a necessary skill for illustrators when he started his career. One of his earliest jobs was drawing and lettering price labels at a studio that produced catalogs for various companies.
