Chapter Books

Basil of Baker Street was another collaboration with Eve Titus that led to a successful series. The protagonist is a mouse detective who lives in Sherlock Holmes’ house. The character was adapted as the basis for the Disney movie The Great Mouse Detective.

Galdone illustrated a wide variety of chapter books by many authors. Notable among these are the original Miss Pickerell series by Ellen MacGregor, the wilderness adventure books of William O.Steele and Scott Corbettʼs The Lemonade Trick which was followed by eleven subsequent Trick books.

Space Cat was written by the Scottish poet, novelist and scholar Ruthven Todd. Published by Scribners in 1952, it was the first of a four book series. The other titles are; Space Cat Visits Venus 1955, Space Cat Meets Mars 1957 and Space Cat and the Kittens 1958.
